I Wish Things Were Different / CUT OFFS
I Wish Things Were Different - In his first show at the Kayo since selling the gallery to current owners Shilo Jackson and Davina Pallone at the end of 2007, founder Kenny Riches fittingly focuses on the past. “I Wish Things Were Different” is comprised of drawings that recall his past and the pasts of those around him—stories lived and stories told. The drawings evoke nostalgia, hardship, change and adventure, but definitely not regret. (via: Kayo Gallery)
Cut Offs - Moving from this old media to the Internet, digital cameras, and a world completely saturated with media made us contemplate quality of content as well, especially because we utilize that media to produce these videos. Even for the viewer to have the ease of inserting a DVD into a player holds its own implications. So, the idea of making art films was not just to make abstract experimental videos, it was about making a connection and giving a cinematic experience. We hope that this little collection of videos does connect the viewer in some individualistic way and push them to find the conceptual relationships between the vignettes. Oh So Material
An exhibition of five artists working across a variety of media– installation, sculpture, found object, textile, and painting that explore material and its role in the finished work. Artists respond to the space itself via installation and material choices, and viewers can explore how these choices connect their separate aesthetics. The artists– Shawn Porter, Jared Lindsay Clark, Stephanie Leitch, John Andrews, and Brenda Wattleworth– have some similar visual sensibilities despite their different media choices, and are connected by the way their work compliments each other in a grouping. The exhibition will explore material and its relationship to concept, aesthetic, and the surrounding architectural space.

Late Nights

So hi. It’s been a while. During the last few months I have devoted the majority of my time working on a collaborative video project with my friend and roommate called CUT OFFS.
The idea for the project came while chatting over coffee one afternoon in April. Since then, we’ve been collecting stills and videos and editing them together to form something that really represents our lives and experiences during past year.
Tonight marks t-minues 12 days to the opening of I Wish Things Were Different at Kayo Gallery where we’ll be showing our hard work. Right now, I’m putting the finishing touches on the videos and cramming to layout the book for printing.
I can’t wait!
Shooting Jimmie’s
A month back I met with an artist who was interested in putting together a book. The subject: his house. Which I can only describe is a life sized diorama. Since beginning this project a few days ago, I’ve snapped just under 900 photographs. Tonight, I’ve edited them down and set aside around 80 of my favorites. On Tuesday I’ll be heading to Portland to have my dear friend Tyler layout the book. I’m super excited to share the final product. For now, here’s an image that I like but didn’t make the cut.

A music video..

A few nights ago I was laying in my bed. Unable to sleep. This doesn’t really strike most people as odd, but I don’t usually have this problem. For nearly three hours, I tossed and turned while my mind was trying to work things out. Two or three days prior, Kenny and I decided on a song to put to video from a, currently, unreleased album from our friend Will Sartain. I was pumped because I had really fallen in love with a few of these songs, but couldn’t really visualize the lyrics as pictures. So in the midst of my insomnia, I finally solved the puzzle. I jetted out of bed. Found the book project’s sketch book, roughly storyboarded my idea, and with wonderful ease, I passed out. Now, usually when these late night ideas pop in I’ll wake up, read them over, and they’ll make zero sense. This time, though, that didn’t happen. It wasn’t complete jibberish. Fastforward to two days later.. shooting the first third of the video was done. The first thing I did that night was transfer the data to my computer and start editing. A few hours later, goosebumps. For most that sit in front of a piece of paper, drawing what they see is extremely difficult. For me, ditto. I can’t do it. Pens, paint, you name it, it all comes out like a loose ball of yarn – not the tightly wound globe I had envisioned. This time, however, I had woven this idea together and a few days later, I could see it on my computer screen.. shot by shot identical. It felt amazing.
Update: Video scrapped. Too bad.

New job
A week or so ago I was chatting online with my dear friend Shane. We arrived on the topic of work and how I hadn’t had a job in a really long time and how difficult it has been. Well, meet my new job: scanner/capturer of digital media and online resaler. I helped make his trip a little easier by giving him a little more room to breathe in the batvan and he’s helping me by giving me something to do.
Thanks friend. I’d give you a hug if you weren’t 2100 miles away.
